Where does StatWP get its data?
Public WordPress.org plugin and theme APIs, plus a daily snapshot of the whole catalog that StatWP stores. The directory publishes the current state; the rank history, growth trends and niche movement are ours because we have been recording them.
How does StatWP estimate active installs?
WordPress.org only publishes rounded install buckets, for example 10,000+. The moment a listing moves from 50,000+ to 60,000+, the true count crossed that line, and that crossing is a measurement rather than a guess. StatWP anchors on those flips, then combines them with rank among listings in the same bucket, and downloads where rank is thin. Confidence is highest right after a flip and on listings under about 10,000 installs, lowest at 1 million and above, where one bucket spans 900,000 installs. Where history is too thin we show the bucket instead of an estimate.
Do download counts mean new users?
No, and it is the most common misreading in the ecosystem. WordPress.org counts every zip download, so one site auto-updating counts again on every release. Downloads signal release cadence and reach, not growth. Active installs are the number that matters, which is why we spend the effort estimating them.

How often does anything update?
The catalog is refreshed daily, and tracked keyword ranks are checked daily. Growth Tracker emails a digest every other day, so you do not have to check by hand. A review analysis runs on demand and usually finishes in about a minute.
